Story
This World Suicide Prevention Day, whether you are going through a difficult time or supporting someone else who may be struggling, it is important to take some time to look after yourself. Reach out for support. Samaritans are here to listen. You can call anytime on 116 123 for free or email jo@samaritans.org
In conjunction with The Samaritans for World Suicide Prevention Day , The Dialing Tone Chorus are singing the Bill Wither's classic 'Lean on Me' to remind us all there is always someone out there to listen and to support . We are big supporters of the Samaritan as our choir leader Gitika's dad went through some very dark times and got a great deal of solace and comfort from phoning the Samaritans in the middle of the night when he felt he had nowhere else to turn to. Knowing there was a voice on the other end of the phone ( or on the end of an email ) was total lifeline.
There were 5,691 suicides in England and Wales in 2019, 321 more compared to 2018, according to the Office National Statistics figures released today. Men aged 45-49 remain at the highest risk of suicide in 2019 – a worrying trend that has persisted for decades. We are also seeing a continued increase in suicide rates among young people, especially females under 25, where the rate has increased since 2012 to its highest level in 2019. 2019 has also shown a disturbing increase in rates among people aged 25 to 44 - a trend which has continued since 2017 for men and 2016 for women.
Samaritans believes that suicide is preventable and small actions can make a big difference and save lives. Everyone can help in playing a part in suicide prevention by learning about how you can support someone who may be having a difficult time and experiencing suicidal thoughts.
