We help struggling families to give children the best start in life

Story

We marked UK Mothers Day this year (10 March) by launching our plan for a school and neighbourhood fun and fund-raising event

on Saturday 6th April 2013, 5-7 pm,

in Didsbury Baptist Church, Beaver Road, Didsbury Manchester M20 6SX

The event is called “Singing For My Mother”.

“Singing For My Mother” is in memory of Anne Langslow 1965-2012. It was inspired by the wish to remember Anne as a mother on our first Mothers Day without her, and, especially given Anne's commitment to the cause of mothering and the support of mothers, more widely to acknowledge and reflect on the contribution of mothers and mothering to family, school, neighbourhood, and wider and wider communities in our country and our world.

Anne’s book Mothering will be on sale on the day–all proceeds to Home Start.

The 6th April is midway between two key Mothers Days, Mothers Day in the UK (the fourth Sunday in Lent) and Mothers Day in much of the rest of the world (the second Sunday in May).

The purpose is to acknowledge mothers and mothering, together as a community

– to offer an occasion for the school, the neighbourhood, their friends and their families to come together to remember and thank their mother, whether she is known to them or not, still living or departed. It is the most precious relationship.

It is an informal event with a relaxed programme of music, readings, pictures and words from individuals and groups, followed by some refreshments with homemade goodies.

We have a marvellous venue in Didsbury Baptist Church, with seating for 200, P.A., piano, electric keyboard, guitars, projectors, exhibition boards, refreshment facilities.

Please come.

Please send a favourite picture of your mother

(on paper or for a powerpoint slideshow).

Please suggest a song or a reading for your mother,

please come to sing or read it yourself (accompaniment is there if you need it), and share a few words about your mother.

Please come prepared to sing some songs and choruses with others.

Please donate to Home Start (our JustGiving page is here), and help us raise £1,000.

We realise that it may not be feasible for you to support us in Didsbury on the 6th. But we still wanted to let you know about the project and what we’re doing. And to make you aware of Home Start, the family support charity that we are raising money for. If you have friends in Manchester, please tell them about the event. The more, the merrier.

Please reply by email, post or phone (details below).

Thank you.
