On 1 January 2011 we had the inaugural meeting of the Pioneer Cycling Club. We were all wearing moustaches, and Nick Maude joined us.
At Easter Nick and I chased each other around 80 miles of the New Forest in a cycling sportive. He then attempted a stage of the Tour de France in the summer, but then concentrated on his cricket with the White Hunters – I had never before seen him play with such freedom and joy. He was blossoming in his late 50s.
But then he was diagnosed with cancer of the kidneys, and within a month he had died. On 1 January 2012 the Pioneer Cycling Club assembled again and we toasted our absent friend.
My father died of kidney cancer, aged 47. My brother and I were teenagers, our sister younger still.
My mother died of naso-pharyngeal cancer aged 66.
I shall undertake a range of personal challenges, arrange some social events, and do some community service, to gain support for Kidney Cancer UK's efforts to raise awareness of the disease.
In memory of Nick, Richard Perkins, Roger Morgan Grenville and I are hoping to raise GBP 50,000 between us for Kidney Cancer UK.
