We support people with sickle cell disease to improve their overall quality of life

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

The cause is closer to my heart than anyone can imagine. With an invisible line between people, profit and planet, some may be aware I run a company focused on enabling organisation to factor long term corporate sustainability reporting to the global gold standard GRI. In short we support companies to perform better in support of society. The most important asset my company has to give is time, we give to help others achieve and to live our values (www.totalecomanagement.co.uk).

There are 240,000 people in the UK who are carriers of the sickle cell gene and about 14,500 people have a sickle cell disorder - consequently making it the most common inherited blood disorder in the country. Every year around 12,500 people are diagnosed with Sickle Cell Disease and it is estimated that 1 in 300 people of African, Asian, Mediterranean or African-Caribbean descent have the disease. Without the necessary levels of haemoglobin, red blood cells do not adopt the required shape making them less able to squeeze through small blood vessels. As a result, these blood vessels become blocked meaning that oxygen is not easily transported around the body causing severe pain and damage to organs. Limited blood supply to vital organs such as the heart, lungs and liver can mean that SCD is potentially fatal.

This is my third year of the British 10k London Run. In 2011, I had my partner and son running by my side. Last year it was torrential rain and I had to get the run completed and be back in Surrey for my son's Taekwondo grading in the afternoon (what a rush!). This, my final year, I hope to smash my fundraising record. I also hope for good weather.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

Your donation is not in vain and will go a long way in improving the lives of others as well as shaping their futures. It is only through your kind help that we can begin to make in-roads into tackling this disease

Only if we share the problem of Sickle Cell Disease can we begin to halve the problem. Please dig deep and donate now, and together we can help tun a SICKLE into a SMILE ;)
