Story
Thank you taking the time to visit my just giving website.
On the 17th April 2016 I shall be running the Brighton Marathon. This will be the third time I have run this course. Each time I have said never again but clearly like childbirth you sort of forget the pain until you are back there training once again and then you remember only too late why you said never again!!
This time it means something quite different and personal to me.
Since I last ran in 2012, cancer seems to have impacted on a lot of people close to me. Late in 2012 we lost my brother in law Chris Burris aged 47 to cancer. Chris left behind Rachel and their five lovely children (yes Isaac even you!) aged at the time between the years of 7 and 17.
Then last year my own step sister Anthea Garley aged 51 developed breast cancer. Anthea is married to Shaun and mother to Louisa aged 14 and William 12. Following a mastectomy and chemo she lost all her hair rendering her slightly 'bod' like in looks (for those of us over 40 you will know what I mean) however she is now on the road to making a full recovery.
Carol John is one of my friends who I met 10 years ago. Both our children are the same age (Michael is 15 and Izzy 13) going through all their primary school years in the same classes. Carol was diagnosed with lung cancer last summer and after chemo is now on a maintenance programme requiring a cocktail of various drugs every 3 weeks. She really is quite a remarkable person remaining upbeat and positive at all times. She is forever seen around and about driving the children to their various clubs refusing to allow her illness to get the better of her. What an inspiration!
Howard Johns is the brother of one my closest friends Simone. Howard is 42 ( recently married to Gemma) and was first diagnosed with cancer when we were still at school. He has lived with cancer in various forms all his life and now suffers from Sarcoma a rare form of cancer. His own positive attitude has been a constant theme throughout his life -refusing to adopt anything other than a 'can do' approach. Simone constantly talks in awe of him. An amazing man!
And last but not least John Chapman. John is married to Marie my wonderful PA , both of whom have recently retired. John was diagnosed only last month with lung cancer caused by working with asbestos several years ago. Sadly his own condition is terminal however as is his generous nature he is looking to work with the medical profession by undergoing certain tests and research to help others in the future who may suffer with this diagnosis.
There you go.... my reasons for running for Macmillan. The facts suggest 1 in 3 of us will suffer from cancer at some stage in our lives and the more we can do to ease the situation for the people we care about the better.
Thank you for visiting my web page. I have paid for my own entry ticket and accommodation so every single penny donated will go to Macmillan. Your donation would be gratefully appreciated.
Thank you
