Story

Thank you for visiting Shelly's life-saving liver transplant - 10 years is something to celebrate - fundraising page.

On Saturday 25 January 2014 Shelly will be holding a fundraising celebration party to raise money for the hospital which saved her life. It will mark 10 years since her emergency liver transplant.

Shelly and her family will be doing 10 challenges to help with the fundraising:

1) The National Three Peaks Challenge
On the 27th and 28th August 2013, Stuart (Shelly’s husband) and his cousin, Ian Ashworth, and Jack and Justin Smith (Shelly’s 15 year old brothers) will be doing The National Three Peaks Challenge.

They will each attempt to climb the highest mountains of Scotland,  England and Wales within 24 hours. They will climb each peak in turn, and are driven from the foot of one mountain to the next. The three peaks are:

- Ben Nevis (1,344 metres, 4,409 ft), the highest mountain in Scotland

- Scafell Pike (978 m, 3,209 ft), the highest mountain in England

- Snowdon/Yr Wyddfa (1,085 m, 3,560 ft), the highest mountain in Wales

Please sponsor them all by donating here as it’s a very tough challenge. Good luck boys!

2) Writing and illustrating a children's book

Shelly and her sister Rachael will be writing a children's book, inspired by Shelly's desire to read it one day to her daughter, Indiana, to share how special life is after a transplant.

David Keen (Shelly's brother-in-law) will be illustrating the book.

The book will be printed and each copy sold will be donated to the Liver Ward. Books can be bought at the fundraising celebration party in 2014, but you can sponsor them all by donating here as it's a very creative challenge. Good luck!

3) Give It Up Month – it’s as easy as ABC….

For the whole month of June, Shelly's sister Rachael will be giving up Alcohol, Bread and Chocolate. For the whole month of July, Shelly will be giving up Alcohol, Bread and Crisps. For the whole month of November Shelly's friend, Sarah Evans, will be doing the ABC diet as well.  You can join in too and help raise money, or show your support by sponsoring them. Good luck!

4) Family Favourites Recipe collection

Shelly will be collecting lots of our family favourite recipes and intends to put them all into one book which you will be able to buy for a donation. Shelly will let us know when the collection is ready and she hopes those who buy one will enjoy cooking, and eating, all the special recipes she enjoys.

5) Teddy Bears' Picnic

Shelly and Rachael are organising a Teddy Bears' Picnic on Saturday 31 August 2013, from 11am until 1pm, in Halstead. It will cost £5 per child and includes an hour of 'Cheeky Chimps' music with Anita Albery, who has kindly donated her time for free. Anita will provide music, singing, dancing, instruments, bubbles and lots more fun! Children will have a visit from Brooke Bear from Addenbrooke's Hospital, and will be given a free teddy, kindly donated from Addenbrooke's Charitable Trust (ACT), to take home. Children should bring a teddy, and parents should bring a picnic and blanket. All proceeds will be donated to ACT. If your little one(s) would like to attend, please get in touch with us.

6) Bike Ride

Robert Ashworth (Shelly's brother-in-law) will be cycling from Halstead in Essex to Sudbury in Suffolk, and back again, in September 2013. It's a charity bike ride organised by Holmes & Hills Solicitors, Essex, who have kindly agreed to donate some of the proceeds to ACT. Thank you very much for this generosity and we will be supporting Robert in his challenge. Good luck!

7) Coffee morning

Shelly’s step-mum, Lorraine, will be hosting a coffee morning at her house in Little Baddow, Chelmsford, from 9.30am on 6 September 2013. There will be coffee and tea available, cakes which you can buy and freebies from Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust which you can take home. If you would like to come along, please get in touch.

8) Bungee Jump at Addenbrooke’s Hospital on 22 September 2013

Shelly’s cousin, Andrew Rae, will be doing a bungee jump at Addenbrooke’s Hospital to raise money for ACT. He will launch himself from a platform high in the sky and plummet rapidly towards the ground, with nothing more than an elastic band to save him. This is a very brave challenge and we wish him lots of luck!

9) Carol Singing in December 2013

Shelly and her family will be braving the cold in December to collect money for ACT by carol singing. If you’d like to join them, they’d welcome your support, and please show your support by sponsoring them.

10) Raffle at the Fundraising Party on 25 January 2014

Shelly’s friends and family, and local businesses, will be donating prizes which will be raffled off on the night of her 10 year celebration. There will be some fantastic prizes on offer, so please help Shelly to raise even more money by buying raffle tickets at the party.

That's the ten challenges!

Following Shelly's transplant on 21 January 2004 she has made an incredible recovery. It is a real milestone to reach 10 years on and to note how well she is doing and how grateful we all are to Addenbrooke's Hospital and the Liver Transplant Ward.

This is our chance to give something back and to thank Shelly's donor and his family, without whom Shelly wouldn't be here.

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to donate to Addenbrooke's Charitable Trust (ACT) - Ward F5/G5 (the Liver Transplant Ward) who will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.

Shelly was given the gift of life - now it's your chance to say thank you!

Many thanks for your support.
