Story
All of the work undertaken by the 1st Sensory Legion is completely funded by donations and everything is run by a team of volunteers headed up by two of the most amazing people you are every likely to meet and they put on events known as Feel the Force Day (FTFD).
One of the reasons Feel the Force Day exists is to make it possible for guests with disabilities to enjoy a Film/TV/Comic Con event in the same manner (and I hate to use this word) as a normal guest.
Not all disabilities are visible and some are very visible - so the team at Feel the Force Day but on an event that EVERYONE can enjoy and feel comfortable at. FTFD events are truely accessible for wheelchairs and scooters, aisles are wide to allow guests with walking aids, tables are at a height that a wheelchair or shorter guests can access.
Sensory rooms and touch tables are available for guests with visual or hearing problems. Quiet rooms for guests who are anxious, autistic or need a space that is quiet and away from the crowds.
Most events have signs that say do not touch! Not at FTFD we have "PLEASE TOUCH" signs. Guests are encouraged to touch props and costumes. FTFD is a festival of light, sound and vision, touch and taste - something for all the senses. One on One costumer experiences are also made available. It really is the most amazing event. Our Team currently includes - Sharon James, Sam Edger, Ben Beal, James Wilde with our support member and chEAR leader Nathan James - previous runners Jonathan Shaw (who has cerebal palsy) and Mandy Powell are unfortunately unable to make this year - so they will be chearing us on from home. We all ran last years 5k race and Ben, Mandy, Jonathan and Sharon also ran the 10k.
This year all 4 of us are running the 5k (friday night) and 10k race (saturday morning), and Sharon & Ben are also running the half marathon on Sunday morning to complete the 36k challenge.
Running at the Magic Run Weekend is a fantastic experience, and being able to do this and raise some money for the most amazing cause just tops it off - we win all round.
