Story
Sebastian Michael Richmond Smart was still born on the 6th April 2014.
After 9 months of a perfect pregnancy - to find the little baby who we deeply loved and cared for had died seemed completely unfathomable and immeasurably cruel. Weeks of despair, pain and unanswered questions followed; What happened? Why? What was wrong?
A full autopsy was undertaken, which showed there was absolutely nothing wrong with Sebastian or Fiona; no infection, internal bleeding, organ defect, cord issues; It happened and nobody could give a reason why - how is this possible when we live in such advanced times?
Still birth affects 7 in every 1000 families in the western world and this figure has not altered in 20 years.
In going through this experience, we have discovered that there is simply not enough research or funding that goes into the cause of such an event.
These are our children from the moment of conception - it is surely wrong that this is such an under researched and under funded area.
During this difficult time we were moved by the high volume of messages from family, friends and acquaintances and this support gave us much needed comfort.
Sebastian is sleeping with the angels now but as his parents we are determined that his name and his love lives on. He cruelly never got the chance to make his own impression on the world - this is now and always will be our mission.
