I'm a radiologist at Royal Bournemouth hospital and we are fundraising for a mini MRI scanner,
MRI scans give fantastically detailed images of all parts of the body. They are particularly useful in diagnosing bone and joint injuries as well has having a crucial role in cancer diagnosis and staging. A mini MRI scanner allows us to image arm hand leg and foot injuries without the claustrophobia of lying inside a full size MRI. By diverting this imaging to the mini scanner we will have more capacity for body and brain imaging in patients with conditions like stroke and cancer.
I started open water swimming when I moved to Bournemouth hospital and with a group of friends decided we would tackle this epic challenge. We swim an hour at a time wearing only a swimsuit hat and goggles alongside a small pilot boat as we cross one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world. The main hardships are the cold water, strong sea currents, jellyfish and the seasickness when sitting on the support boat. I have chosen to put myself through this remembering that my patients do not have the choice.
I'm swimming in a team of 5 and although I'm the only medic we are all raising money for health related charities, as well as the RNLI whose lifeguards keep Bournemouth’s beaches safe.
