ChildLine is the 's free 24-hour helpline for children and young people.
Around 4,500 children call ChildLine every day, but the charity only has the resources to answer 2,500. This means that around 2,000 children go unanswered each day.
Almost 1,400 volunteers provide a counselling service, supervised by a team of professional supervisors and managers.
Children call ChildLine for a variety of reasons - bullying is the single most common reason. Other children call about physical, emotional or sexual abuse and neglect as well as issues about problems with friends, concern for others, etc
Children call ChildLine for practical advice or a listening ear. Others need months of patient, skilled telephone counselling. And for some, ChildLine is quite literally a lifeline.
ChildLine is a child centred service – volunteer counsellors absolutely believe children, don’t judge them and allow them to decide what happens next.
Volunteer counsellors provide a confidential telephone counselling service 365 days a year, including Christmas day!
How does ChildLine help?Since it was launched in 1986, ChildLine has saved children's lives, found refuges for children in danger on the streets, and given hope to thousands of children who believed no one else cared for them. ChildLine has now counselled two million children and young people.
ChildLine campaigns on behalf of children by relaying what they tell the charity to policy-makers who can help change children’s lives for the better.
Where is ChildLine located?ChildLine operates out of 12 counselling centres around the : , , , , Leeds, , Liverpool, Nottingham, , , Prestatyn, , and one opening soon in . The centre operates a 24-hour service, but during peak hours when the other centres are open, children’s calls go through to the nearest centre
Where does your money go?
Every day around 4,500 children call ChildLine, but lack of funds means that only 2,500 of them will get through to our counsellors for comfort, advice and protection.
Every pound you give makes a big difference.
Just £4 enables ChildLine to answer a child’s call, and £42 covers all the costs of counselling one child. Recruiting and training a new volunteer counsellor costs £1,598. ChildLine currently has more than 1,350 volunteer counsellors.
Please help ChildLine reach all the children who need them.
Right now a lack of funds means that of the 4,500 children who call each day, only 2,500 can get through to a counsellor. Our joint aim is to help ChildLine make sure that every child who needs help can get through the first time they call. Please help however you can – so ChildLine can offer the comfort, advice and protection that children in danger and distress need.

“If you came into work every day and somebody thumped you, would it be ok? Why is it ok if it happens to someone who’s under 18?” – Lindsay Gilbert, ChildLine
“It’s hard for most people to believe – or maybe they don’t always want to know – what some young people have had to bear in their short lives. No matter how long I work at ChildLine, I am still staggered by what happens to some children.” – Emma, volunteer counsellor
