Story
The war in Ukraine has devastated many lives with people suffering injuries to multiple limbs from bomb blasts and mines.
UKMed has been working with a team of surgeons in Ukraine to train them in limb reconstructive surgery. This is technically demanding work that they had not been involved in prior to the war. They are quick learners and have excellent skills so they are learning fast. They have started to do tendon transfers in the hand, nerve repairs and nerve grafts as well as microsurgery for transferring muscles from one part of the body to another. This means that function is restored to hands and legs that would otherwise have been amputated are salvaged. We are also training physiotherapists to help with the rehabilitation of these injured patients. We are very encouraged by the rapid progress that has been possible.
Training has been by a combination of visits from UK experts to provide courses and then on the job training, and team visits to the UK plus sponsored attendance at international conferences and courses.
Will you help with raising funds needed for this endeavour? Some of the equipment they need is not available in Ukraine and is too expensive for their health service to support. They also need help with funding the travel to attend conferences and courses that will further develop their knowledge in this field. The funds that you donate will be carefully managed to ensure that the maximum benefit is achieved. Let's go restore some limbs!
