UPDATE

I'm very very happy to tell you that on Thursday 1st August 2013 I successfully completed by English Channel solo swim in 16hrs 35mins.  I left from Shakespear Beach just after 4am, swam into a wonderful sunrise and landed with at Cap Blanc Nez at France under a gorgeous sunset.  The swim is filled with a million special memories that I will always treasure.  A massive thank-you goes out to all of my wonderful support crew, and pilot for safely getting me to France.

I have been overwhelmed by all the fantastic words of encouragement and donations that I have received, thank-you so much.

To view a short video I've made from pictures taken by my support crew on the swim click here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Hm9P_pEAtE&feature=youtu.be.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am training to swim the English Channel on the neap tide from the 29 July to the 6 August 2013.

The English Channel is an iconic challenging swim.  The Channel is one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world, with approximately 600 vessels moving up and down every day, plus the ferries, seacats and jetfoils crossing between England and France at very regular intervals.

The shortest distance across the Channel is from Shakespeare Beach, Dover, to Cap Gris Nez (the headland halfway between Calais and Boulogne). This distance is 18.2 nautical miles which is approximately 21 land miles, but swims can cover 30 – 40 miles due to the tides.

The water temperature is likely to be somewhere between 15-18C and I will be undertaking the swim wearing one swimming hat, a pair of goggles and a standard swimming costume.

Through the swim I would like to help raise funds for both Cancer Research UK and Macmillan Cancer Care.  I have been personally inspired by the strength, courage and determination of people affected by cancer.  If you would like to support me I would really appreciate it, so please dig deep and donate now.
