An organ transplant is not something you ever think your family will experience. From initially discovering that his kidneys would never recover to the levels they needed for long term health, through to transplant recovery, the kidney teams have all been an incredible to my Dad. Kidney Care UK raises funds to provide patient and family support at a scary time. 

For our family, transplant was doubly worrying with my Mum acting as a live donor to my Dad. They are both healthy and almost 5 years after transplant, both had functioning organs that could support an active life. I’ll never forget that moment when they wheeled Mum to theatre and then Dad afterwards, knowing they were in theatre and recovery together, crossing over with a live organ taken from one and placed inside the other… 45 years of marriage… that’s love! 

We are devastated to have lost Dad in December 2021 as a result of covid-19. The immunosuppressants meant he didn’t stand a chance and although he fought so hard we watched him slip away.

I’ll forever be grateful to the NHS and to Kidney Care UK for helping us to understand the process and getting us through the bumps in the post-transplant road. I would like to contribute to fundraising to help other families get more information about transplant and the impact of immunosuppressants on the ability to fight viruses.
