Update 09/03/10 - The Deed is Done!
Dear All,
Wow!!! What an AMAZING day Friday was! Thanks to all of you who came to watch me at The English Rose salon, we had a great crowd and the support was fantastic. Thanks to those who have sent me photos....I went all weekend without any as obviously, I was a little pre-occupied to be taking any myself! Hope you like them and don't think I look too scary?!!
The Gazette photographer was absolutely lovely (see the Bad Hair Day feature in this Thursday's Basingstoke Gazette) and put me at my ease throughout all his shoting. Claire Smith kindly took control of the video and Sarah Evans from St. Michaels Hospice came to give her support too. Peter Smith (Focus Europe @ Worting House) joined in the fun, arriving in wig, fake moustache and T-shirt - somehow, it really suited him having hair although he did remind me of a 70's pimp!
First cut was made by the Office Manager from Worting House, Julie Kehoe then my lovely hairdresser Chloe continued to chop it all of so it was short enough not to jam in the trimmer blades. Next came the point of no return! Out came the trimmers and off came the hair!!! Although it felt a bit weird, the worst thing was having the mirror behind me, I couldn't see what was going on (although that may have been a blessing in disguise). All I could see were the reactions on people's faces as the hair fell to the floor......some of encouragement, some of sheer horror! Then, the wet shave - ouch, scratchy!
Before I knew it, it was done. Months of growing my hair - now just a pile on the floor!
Once everyone had gone, Joanne Goodman whisked me away for what had to have been the best, most relaxing facial EVER! I think the wine may have helped a little but boy - it was good! Then a full make-up and some great tips on how to do it when you have no hair. Emphasise the eyes apparently, so it's the first thing people see - rather than my bald head!
All-in-all this has been such a great experience. I've met some lovely people, had such wonderful support and I feel proud that by doing such a daft thing, I've been able to give a little something back to the Hospice, who had cared for my loved ones so well.
Glad to say, it's already growing back. Wearing anything on my head just itches like mad and it's like velco, everything sticks to it so I'm going without a hat as much as I can......just wish the weather would warm up.....it's blooming FREEZING without hair!
Money still being donated so I'll keep you posted on totals. At the moment it's standing at approx £1,550 - BRILLIANT!!!!
So, I'll stop waffling now but just one final thing to say.........
THANK YOU EVERYONE!!!!!
All my love and best wishes,
Sarah. xxx
Update 04/03/10 - OMG, THIS TIME TOMORROW!!!!
Dear All,
All the plans are made and confirmed, buffet ordered, drinks bought (including a LARGE bottle of vodka which will be opened tonight!!), T-shirts picked up and basically, ready to roll!
T-shirts are FANTASTIC....THANK YOU ALL AT MAD PRINT, BASINGSTOKE! I shall be wearing them with pride for the next few weeks, just so strangers will understand why I'll be looking so damn dodgy! Phil will be modelling one at 2E2 tomorrow as well....he's been such a great support, with words of encouragement, getting sponsors, listening to me waffle on about it all the time! I can't imagine many blokes would be happy to see their girlfriend as an egg-head but, he is one very special guy!
Tomorrow I'm getting a lift into work and taxi home, just so I can part-take in a wine (or two!!) at lunchtime to calm my nerves. Thing is, is it nerves or excitement? I can't work it out but waking up at 4.30am thinking about it means that it's probably on my mind more than I realise.
As I mentioned below - feel free to come and watch, the more the merrier! Apparently the first thing is to cut my hair short (so it doesn't get caught in the blades), then the clippers, followed by a wet shave with foam, so with all that to go through, I might see if anyone wants to "have a go for some dough".
So dear friends, colleagues and all......my next update will be with photos of the deed. Thank you all again for your wonderful words of support and sponsorship.
Now where's that vodka.....?!!!!
Lots of love,
Sarah x
Update 26/02/10 - A WEEK TO GO!!!!!!!
Dear All,
Well the sponsors have continued to roll in and I'm so greatful to everyone who's backed me!
I'm actually looking in the mirror now and thinking "I like my hair at this length - what the hell have I got myself into??!!!" but it's too late now and I just keep reminding myself that its for a good cause. Phil's concerned I might like the shaven look, buy a pair of dungarees, get some butch tattoos and "comfy" shoes and turn into a lesbian......I think not!!!! My 12 year old son just thinks that Mum has finally lost the plot and will look "disgusting", he's already given me clear instructions that when dropping him off at school, I MUST wear a hat.....kids eh?!!!
So, doors open at 12.15 at the English Rose Salon, Worting House (on main road out to Oakley/Whitchurch) on Friday 5th March and the shaving will be at precisely 12.30. Come and have a laugh on me....I'll be the one slightly tipsy, shaking and heading for the door!!!
Hope to see you there!!!
Lots of love
Sarah x
Additional thanks go to the following companies for their support and donations:
Mad Print (printing me some "wot no hair!!" t-shirts)
Worting House (providing a buffet for everyone who comes to watch on the day)
The English Rose (shaving me bald, facial, make up and allowing me to take over the salon!)
Jacquelines (for donating some "fashion" wear for my baldy head!)
.....and to these companies who have donated items towards a future raffle: The Watercress Line, Sports Centre, Dummer Golf Club, Aspects of Fitness, The Lookout Centre, Game.......more to come.
Update 15/02/10 - Flippin' 'eck!!!
Dear All,
Thank you to EVERYONE who has sponsored me so far! Although I've only been raising money for a week, it looks as though my target is achievable and may (hopefully!) blow it out of the water! Everyone has been so generous and supportive......a BIG kiss to you all (no tongues though!!)!!!! xxx
I'm going to offer those that have donated to come and watch, poke fun at me and enjoy a drink and nibbles on the day....so watch this space for details, Basingstoke Gazette will be there too so I hope you can make it!!
There's also a nice link with the hair salon who are going to "do the deed" for me on the 5th March. Joanne Goodman, proprietor of The English Rose Salon in Basingstoke also works with the Elizabeth Hall Cancer Care Unit at Basingstoke hospital on their "Look Good, Feel Good" project. She helps women who have lost their hair through chemotherapy feel confident and feminine through make-up, skin care and pampering......a great cause. As such she has also offered me a facial and make-up after I lose my hair, so I don't feel as bad!!! So a BIG thanks to Jo for her support with my fundraising too and letting me "take over" her salon!!
Lots of love,
Sarah x
Hi There!
For those of you that don't know me, my name is Sarah and I'm going to be taking part in BAD HAIR DAY on March 5th in aid of St. Michaels Hospice. They help people faced with life-limiting illness, providing specialist care and support to enable them to attain the highest possible quality of life.
So - you're probably thinking that I have bad hair already (that photo is a bit old and it's longer now!) but my BAD HAIR DAY is going to be NO HAIR - shaving off the lot!!!!
Why St. Michaels Hospice I hear you ask (and if you didn't then I'll tell you anyway!)? Both of my Granddads spent their last few days there, with terminal cancer and the support and care that the staff give is outstanding. With almost all of their funding coming via charitable donations, I just wanted to give something back to them, as thanks for the way they looked after my family. So what better way than to do a sponsored head shave...hey, it'll grow back...eventually!!
Cancer touches so many people's lives and we never know when we will need such a place, if we do, at least we know we're in good hands.
I hope to raise over £1000 so would be extremely grateful if you'd sponsor me and support such a great cause!
Thank you so much,
Sarah
P.S. - will also accept any additional donations of hats or wigs and don't forget to "gift aid" your donation and get the Inland Revenue to pay out 28p in every £1!!!
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
