The Marathon des Sables (MDS)
Described as “the toughest footrace on earth” An extraordinary race… for extraordinary people… in an extraordinary place”
I am about to embark upon the challenge of a lifetime. Not a marathon this time, or even an Ironman, but the Marathon des Sables - a self sufficient run of 156 miles across the Sahara.
The Marathon des Sables is ranked by the Discovery channel as “the toughest footrace on earth”. Known simply as the MdS the race is a multi-stage running adventure through a formidable landscape in one of the world’s most inhospitable climates- the Sahara desert. The rules require runners to be self sufficient and carry everything that they need to survive (except water) on their back and at times in temperatures in excess of 40 degrees. Runners are given a place in a (communal) tent to sleep at night but any other equipment must be carried.
The Mds started in 1986 and places are much sought after. Is a truly international event and when the final stage is completed, competitors will have run the equivalent of five and a half marathons in five days, a total distance of 156 miles.
MdS runners have raised funds to help hundreds of charities. I have chosen to run for one of the designated MdS charities - Cancer Research and am honoured to be running and raising money for a charity which is close to all of our hearts. Cancer Research is bringing new cures and funding world-leading drug development research across the UK. We have all been touched by someone who has been affected by cancer and one day we will beat this terrible disease. The more research we are able to do, the sooner that day will come.
As I am doing this for a charitable cause, I would be grateful for any assistance you are able to provide in helping me towards my fund-raising goal of £10,000. I am well on my way thanks to some fantastic donations from Phil Bessant Ltd and Aztech Assemblies Ltd, but still have a long way to go. All donations, regardless of size would be gratefully received and can be made using a debit, or credit card via this just giving page. Alternatively, cash or cheque donations would also be most welcome.
I appreciate you taking the time to view this page and thank you very much in anticipation for any support you are able to provide.
Sarah.
