Story
In September 2020 I had planned to cycle from England to Germany to raise money in memory of my step-mum Inge, but as we all know, the pandemic turned the whole world upside down and we had to postpone. So I'm pleased to say that this September, I will finally be taking on the challenge!
Following on from completing the Three Peaks with my Dad in 2016 to raise money for BTR, I am swapping my hiking boots for the saddle and cycling to Jever, Germany with the aim to raise £2,740 - which funds a day of research at one of BTR's specialist centres, where they work tirelessly to find a cure.
So why Jever? Well that's where Inge's family are from, so our destination will be their old family home and we'll be starting from Basingstoke, which is where Inge last lived, along with my Dad.
Brain tumours kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer, yet just 1% of the national spend on cancer research has been allocated to support research that could help overcome this devastating disease. This is appalling and has to change.
Led by the charity Brain Tumour Research and its Member Charities, over 120,000 people signed a parliamentary e-petition to fund more research into brain tumours in 2016, demonstrating just how many people are affected by this devastating disease. This led to the establishment of the Department of Health & Social Care Task and Finish Working Group on brain tumour research and a funding award from government and Cancer Research UK.
Unfortunately, this falls short of what is needed to improve the desperately poor survival rates for brain tumours, with less than 20% of patients surviving five years after diagnosis.
This leaves it down to us to make a difference.
After Inge passed away in February 2019 I wanted to do something to help BTR and I hope that one day we're able to find a cure that will prevent other families from having to go through this loss.
So I've managed to persuade my boyfriend David and my Dad to come on this ride with me. We will self-fund and navigate the route from Basingstoke to Jever.
Every penny that you donate will help spur us along and will directly change lives with the research that it enables.
