Story
I had never known anyone with dementia until my Aunt revealed that she was suffering in 2014. To see someone we loved lose all her sense of who she was, as well as her dignity along the way, because of the progression of this disease has been one of the most difficult journeys we have faced. She was a bright, articulate, headstrong woman for whom I had the utmost respect, admiration and love. I had always been close to her and my parents and I found not only the diagnosis difficult but knowing where to turn to gain support for her.
The Alzheimer's Society was a wonderful support, offering practical advice as well as support groups and ideas for my Aunt herself.
In the current climate, the Society needs our support more than ever as many of those with Alzheimer's find themselves in the care homes that have been most devastatingly hit by coronavirus.
With further research, we hope that one day a cure may be found and others may be saved from the cruel fate that more than 850,000 currently share.
