We pioneer life-saving cancer research to help us beat cancer

Story

Myself and my two sisters, Samantha & Abi Gordon, decided to run in aid of cancer research last week whilst our mother, Donna Gordon, was currently battling her third time of being diagnosed with cancer. Both of my sisters have been told that they have the BRCA1 gene associated with Breast and Ovarian cancers and we are all passionate about furthering the research into these genes and helping both our family and others gain better treatment and earlier diagnosis.

The BRCA1 gene is the reason for the repetition of our mum's cancers and my sisters Samantha and Abi have recently found out they also carry this gene. This means their children will have a 50/50 chance of carrying this gene and they have an 80+% chance of developing breast cancer in their lifetime as well as a 60+% chance of developing ovarian cancer. Preventative surgery is now available as well as regular screening to catch this disease as early as possible. More people need to be aware of this hereditary gene defect so they can change their lives for the better.

Our mother was first treated for cancer twelve years ago and after bravely defeating the disease she went on to form her own charity group "Total Therapy" with many of the local parish and  friends, raising thousands of pounds over the years, and inspiring so many. She also ran the race for life with my sisters every year until unfortunately being told she had developed ovarian cancer early last year.  Despite all the odds stacked against her she fought and fought through the surgeries and treatment to be told just before Christmas that she was clear of cancer.  We were all so happy that our heroic mum was still going to be with us.

Only a month ago though, our mum was feeling unwell again and it was apparent that cancer had returned.  Blood tests confirmed this and she was booked in to start treatment again in the middle of may. We were sure she would battle through again as she always did.

Unfortunately, during the period of me applying to run the Great North Run, and the acceptance of my application, our mother suddenly passed away on the morning of May 4th. My Sister Samantha, my father Ron, and my self were all present and desperately tried to bring her back, administering CPR until the paramedics quickly responded.

Although we know we cannot bring our beautiful, caring and inspiring mum back, we will run in her honour and we will run in the hope that one day others will never have to go through the pain our mother did.  Our mum was passionate about helping others and was the kindest and most caring person you could imagine. Even after going though cancer three times, her first thought was always of others, of how we could raise money for cancer research in order to prevent other from going through what she did.
