I've worked for The Sick Children's Trust for over five years now, in three different roles, and in that time I've met scores of families who don't know what they would have done without the work we do.
For those who don't know, The Sick Children's Trust's vision is that no child should have to go through treatment for serious illness without their family by their side. However, with specialist hospitals concentrated in large citites, this means that many children are a long way from home, and families find themselves with nowhere to stay.
That's where our work comes in. The Sick Children's Trust provides families with 'Home from Home' accommodation where they can stay close to their child's side for the entire duration they are in hospital - completely free of charge. Without the work of The SCT, many families would face being split up at the time they need one another most, and not would face what must be a truly horrifying prospect - leaving their sick child alone in hospital.
I've spent the last five years raising money for this excellent cause, by sitting at a computer and writing letters and fundraising bids to some very generous individuals and organisations. But this year, I figured it was my turn to get up and start raising money in a very different way.
So, during 2014, I will be taking on two challenges. I will be running the Bupa 10,000 at the end of May, a 10 kilometre race in London, and in October I will be taking on something that still terrifies me right now - a half marathon. The Royal Parks is what I'm working up to this year, 13 miles around London's streets and parks, and I just hope I can make it round.
Those of you who knew me when I was at school, and jogging/walking asthmatically around the cross country course (116th out of 120 in the year!) will know how much of a change this is for me, and how much of a challenge it's been to get running. So please, dig deep and motivate me to keep going and get round that course, and help families in need at the same time.
Thanks very much for reading, and your generosity!
