Story
Some would say this is better late than never...
I'm sure I've pretty much told everyone I know, but for those who don't know I am running this years London Marathon on behalf of the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC).
The DEC
At times of overseas emergency, the DEC brings together an alliance of the UK's aid, corporate, public and broadcasting sectors to rally the nation's compassion, and ensure that funds go to DEC agencies best placed to deliver effective and timely relief to people most in need. The DEC's remit is to unite agency efforsts in times of disaster - such as flood, earthquake or famine - wherever it happens in the world. The DEC is made up of 13 aid agencies, who are UK registered humanitarian charities who work together to help save lives and rebuild communities devastated by disasters.
With major earthquakes already this year, the work that the DEC is funamental to helping these areas get back on their feet. This year has already seen the following three major earthquakes:
- Haiti - 12th January 2010
You will have undoubtedly seen in the news that on at 4:54pm (local time) on Tuesday 12th January a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti, including the densely populated capital Port-au-Prince, with over 200,000 people killed and 1 million made homeless.
- Chile - 27th February 2010
The 2010 Chilean earthquake occurred off the coast of Chile on February 27, 2010, at 03:34am(local time) rating a 8. 8 magnitude.
- China - 14th April 2010
An earthquake shook China at about 7:49 am local time and registered between a 6.9 and 7.1 on the Richter scale. The quake did widespread damage along the Tibetan Plateau and a reported 500 people have died as a result.
Please donate whatever you can to help this wonderful cause. Also please can you recommend any music track to put on my Ipod during the marathon, as my current selection is terrible to say the least!
Thanks!
Sam
