Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. I’m Sam Duncan and about a year ago I had an idea that I would like to help our ex-armed forces men and women who may have been injured whilst fighting for HM The Queen and Country. Following an accident in 1992 I became paralysed from the waist down after falling 60ft from a roof and I now use a powered wheelchair to get around. I know first-hand how difficult it is when your life is turned upside down in a moment and my heart went out to these veterans that become injured and have their mobility affected in a similar way. Using Motability has meant that I can get around and keep my independence, and I knew they could do the same for others which I why I’ve chosen to specifically raise money for charitable grants for our War Pensioners, recipients of the War Pensioner’s Mobility Supplement (WPMS), to enable them to become mobile.

So once I’d chosen to support Motability I needed to think of a challenge to raise funds, something a bit different…so I thought I’ll drive my wheelchair to somewhere and when I thought about cars and I’m a big fan of Formula One and bingo…I thought I’ll drive my wheelchair 109 miles from Diss to Silverstone! I’ve planned each step of the way, my daughter Charlotte will be leaving on the 26th June and not returning until 3rd July. The wheelchair only has a  maximum speed of 8mph, in contrast to the 185mph that Formula One cars can reach, and I won’t be able to use bus lanes, cycle lanes, dual carriageways or motorways.  I’ll use a trailer to carry supplies and equipment and a generator to power up my wheelchair at night, I’ve also had special foam tyres to prevent punctures fitted.

I would like to thank the following companies who’ve been kind enough to help me; Beactive Mobility Ltd – for donating a trailer for me to use. Kay-Dee Engineering Plastics Ltd/Kaylan – for helping with adjustments to my chair and supporting me with PR and putting me in touch with the right people. Jewson’s – for donating the use of a generator to keep me moving throughout the challenge.

I still need help to make my challenge happen and raise as much as possible for Motability, please give as much as you can! Also if your organisation would like to make a donation, for me to promote you on my challenge with branding or if you have a tent that you could donate which can accommodate me, Charlotte and the Wheelchair powerchair please get in touch, call me on 01379 650787 for a chat.

Thank you from me and from Motability. Sam
