Story
In 2012 I was diagnosed with bilateral breast cancer following a routine screening mammogram. I initially had a mastectomy on one side, a lumpectomy on the other, radiotherapy and chemo. Two years later I had a second mastectomy following another scare which, thankfully, turned out to be a false alarm. I had the mastectomy because I felt it was a time bomb waiting to go off and I didn't feel comfortable keeping the breast.
When I initially got the diagnosis of cancer my brain just focused in on that word and although I thought I was listening at all my consultations, much of what was said, especially at the first few, simply washed over me. Breast Cancer Care produce loads of printed booklets covering every aspect of cancer, its treatment, physical and mental effects for both the patient and their families. This information played a vital role in both my treatment decisions and recovery. It did this by allowing me to fully understand what my cancer was, by explaining the various treatment options, the likely outcomes and giving me the opportunity to formulate the right questions to ask. It didn't stop there because there was more information on the recovery process; physio and exercise to help regain full mobility; advice on how best to prevent cancer returning and a course aimed at restoring confidence and well being once all the treatment was over.
Breast Cancer Care don't just provide printed booklets, they provide phone support and courses, and their care is not confined just to the sufferers themselves but also to their families and carers.
I am approaching 5 years cancer free and feel fit and well. There was a whole team of people responsible for my recovery to whom I will be eternally grateful. Breast Cancer Care played a significant role and I would like to be able to help make sure they are able to continue to fund the work they do by raising money for them in this way.
Since childhood I have loved walking in the countryside especially in hills and on cliff tops. These days my two dogs, Brac & Flint, accompany me where ever I walk in the UK. I have wanted to walk the Inca Trail since I fist saw pictures of Machu Picchu many years ago. By doing it this way I will truly feel I have achieved something worthwhile, although sadly my dogs will have to remain behind. I would like to thank all who donate to this cause and assure you that the money will help many more breast cancer sufferers and survivors.
