Story
The Commission on Homelessness and Poverty's Homeless Court initiative has replicated homeless court dockets across the country to remove barriers to housing, healthcare, employment, education, and more for people experiencing homelessness. Involvement with the criminal justice system can impede access to these services, which can perpetuate a cycle of poverty for many Americans. Often, charges that homeless people face are directly related to their homelessness: looking for food becomes trespassing, sleeping in public becomes loitering.
To counter the negative impact of criminal cases on those experiencing homelessness, the ABA Commission on Homelessness and Poverty has been bringing the courts to the streets to better connect individuals with needed services and to break down legal barriers. Through charitable gifts and grants, nearly 70 Homeless Court have been established across the United States, from San Diego to South Carolina, and reached tens of thousands of individuals.
