In February 2018 we received the horrifying diagnosis that our daughter Lizzie, aged just 9, had an inoperable brain tumour called DIPG. DIPG affects only around 30 children in the UK each year, with an average life of expectancy from diagnosis of only 9 months. Lizzie died in our arms in November 2018, a week before her 10th birthday.
Lizzie participated in a clinical trial part funded by The Brain Tumour Charity, so she understood first-hand the importance of research. You can’t hide much from a 9 year old. Lizzie decided she wanted to set up Lizzie's Fund to further the research funding available into childhood brain tumours and during her illness she threw her energies into fundraising, including publishing her own recipe book, Keep Baking just before she died.
Research into brain tumours is shockingly underfunded in comparison to many other cancers, receiving less than 3% of UK cancer research spend, so as a result survival is also amongst the worst of all cancers - yet it is the LARGEST cancer killer of children and young adults under 40.
So far #Lizziesfund has raised over £330,000 and we are proud to keep working for a cure in Lizzie’s name.
This June, on the Saturday closest to Midsummer, Team Lizzie (Sally, Emma, Eleanor and two wonderful friends Antonia and Rosie) is climbing to the 1,085 metre summit of Mount Snowdon to watch the sunset before descending in the dark.
Lizzie would have loved this adventure, so thank you in advance for your amazing support to funding research to tackle this dreadful disease that took my girl.
