Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Autism - around round 700,000 people in the UK are on the autism spectrum. Together with their families they make up around 2.8 million people whose lives are touched by autism every single day.

When Oliver turned 3 our lives changed when we found out that our son had Autism which largely effects his speak and language, Oli had a series of tests that discovered he had a Chromosome deletion from when he was born.

At the time we didn't know much about Autism.... why would we I suppose but over time we took the time to re think the way with looked at the world with Oli, we had to try and understand what he needed and the way he approached things like social interaction and simple tasks, like how to play and just being able to ask other kids "can I play".

Our son is very close to his mum and enjoys spending time with close family, he attends a regular state school which he largely enjoys but can also be the focus of great anxiety. Regular daily tasks and play are difficult at school, Ollie will go to great lengths not talk to most if not all his friends, apart from a very select few, this is known currently as selective mutism. In the evenings we can be in the swimming pool for up to 3 to 4 hours or on a walk in the dark for the same amount of time (come rain or snow) Just like other kids really but with differences which he understands and we seek to understand better.

Oliver finds any travel really difficult and holidays tend to be a no no, just a simple shopping trip creates it's own challenges. Over time we found amazing ways to engage & learn through creative play or mini adventures using his favorite toys & games to create conversations. Sometimes we did this through films, we used the places in outdoor games to create role play to help him learn, again like most children but for Oliver it takes more time for him to understand why things are a certain way and how to take these into social play, which is very hard for him.

After a motorcycle accident in August 2016 I had time off work, I really enjoyed the wonderful pleasures of walking him to school to playing made up games in the garden, building camps, car races or just going out for a walk around the local area (all with one arm and I broke my collar bone).

After lots of talks about money I agreed with my wife to leave my Design Job in London (which was hard as it was a life long dream job) to support Oliver in his daily adventures with Autism and my wife in her amazing Job.

So here I am writing up this page hoping you will all join me in this event for Autisum Awareness and ride your bike and raise money for families like us
