Story
Thank you for taking the time to visit my fundraising page.
I am walking the marathon in New York with Gerry O Sullivan's children in his memory. Not only was Gerry a great surgeon and researcher in the area of curing cancer but also in his latter days lived with a rare form of cancer himself. What I always found amazing was that he never felt any sense of injustice that this should happen to a champion of cancer research. He said that the statics show that 1 in 3 people suffer from some form of cancer and why not him?
Friends and family could give thousands of reasons for why not him but he passed away in the arms of his family and in the cradle of his own research, the Mercy Hospital, two years ago. An ordinary and extraordinary man. RIP.
Personally I have had two scares in the past two years in relation to cancer and I am most grateful that they were indeed just 'scares'. The question 'What if results had been otherwise?' lingers in my mind.
So just in case I will endeavour to raise money, train as much as possible and cross the finish line of the NYC marathon in memory of Gerry, in memory of his work and to contribute to research that will ultimately save thousands of lives.
