In memory of Samuel John Westbrook
We help the hospital offer a better future to seriously ill children across the UK

Story

We have decided to make a donation to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) in memory of our son, Samuel. This is a small token of our enormous gratitude for the world-class medical care Samuel received. It is also in recognition of the kindness, compassion and practical support given to us by the wider hospital team.  All money raised will help make a difference to the babies, families and staff at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

We have set-up this Just Giving page for anyone who would like to join us in making a donation.

Our Story

Samuel arrived 15 weeks early on 16 August 2017 weighing 805g (1lb 12oz). As is typical for babies this small, Samuel needed a ventilator to help him breath and was attached to a multitude of IV lines and monitors.

When Samuel was 5 days old he developed complications and was transferred from University College London Hospital to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) for emergency surgery.

GOSH is one of the world's leading children's hospitals. During our 24 days there we experienced first hand the world-class care they provide for its young patients and their families.

The team of NICU nurses, consultants, surgeons and specialists worked tirelessly around the clock to care for Samuel and give him the best possible chance.  What stood out most was that everybody we met was so incredibly kind and compassionate. In addition to the medical care, the hospital also provides practical support to parents including accommodation, expressing facilities and counselling.

Samuel and his amazing medical teams gave it everything they had. We could not have asked anything more of him or them. Sadly he was born too small, too soon and too poorly. After a second major operation Samuel's condition deteriorated.  He died peacefully in our arms on the afternoon of 14 September, aged 29 days, covered in cuddles, kisses and love.

We can never fully express our gratitude to the NICU staff at Great Ormond Street Hospital. The kindness, compassion, love and support they give to babies and families is amazing. They are truly inspirational. Without them our journey would have been so much more difficult.

Every donation will help the NICU team at Great Ormond Street Hospital to provide the best facilities and equipment, research, and support to critically ill babies and their families.
