Machu Picchu Trek · 24 August 2015

We start new cancer cures worldwide to ensure no life is cut short by cancer

Story

In August 2015 Molls and I will be completing the Machu Picchu mountain trek, covering high altitudes (over 4000m) over a period of 6 days, in aid of Worldwide Cancer Research.
Those who know me well will probably laugh (or feel deeply sorry for me) as they will know how lazy I am when it comes to walking anywhere, let alone trekking a mountain in Peru...

My mum was diagnosed with breast cancer early this year. I know I speak on behalf of my mum and family when I say at the beginning of the year, it felt like there was absolutely no way through it. And I know there were so many times when giving up with treatment seemed like the only way out.
The past 10 months have consisted of endless hospital appointments, surgery, hours upon hours of chemotherapy, numerous infections and horrible nights in the hospital wards, a dodgy shaved head (courtesy of me - you're welcome mum!), a beautiful bald head, missing eyebrows and eyelashes, radiotherapy, a lot of tears, a few laughs (thanks to the endless fun that comes with a  bald face and an eyebrow pencil!) and finally finally finally a light at the end of the tunnel!

The challenges mum faced made me see life in a very different way, and I really wanted to do something that encompasses this past year and changes it into something positive.

And that is ultimately why I have chosen to go totally against my comfort zone and trek Machu Picchu for World Wide Cancer Research.

Here's more about the charity...

Worldwide Cancer Research (formally known as AICR) currently supports 166 projects in 19 different countries. Their mission is to fund the best scientific research into the causes and prevention of cancer, no matter where in the world.

Just some of these valuable projects include;
- Developing new prostate cancer treatments for men who have become resistant to current therapies (California, USA)
- Studying breast cancer resistance to Tamoxifen (Melbourne, Aus)
- Working to improve standard treatment for non-small cell lung cancer (The Netherlands)
- Learning how bowel stem cells develop in tumours (Barcelona, Spain

I am looking to raise £2900 for this worthwhile charity, which supports research all over the world.

Thank you so much for any donations! Appreciate anything!!

Loads of love, Ruby xxxx
