I suppose that we all know someone who has been diagnosed with cancer. Whether it's a loved one, relative or colleague, or even a friend, such news can initially seem devastating. Cancer Care, with the support of professional staff, expertise and facilities can play a vital role in supporting and enabling people and their families in many situations.
To help Cancer Care provide important and nessessary care, Team BLS have decided to raise needed funds by riding :-
Land's End to John O'Groats. The Great British Bike Adventure
So please dig deep and donate now.
Guy has done this before way back in 2000. Much older but not wiser (it is said "the older you get the dafter you become"). This is his anniversary. At least it's an anniversary he remembers?
Guy and Ken are also doing the London marathon this year. I'm not!! Instead I will watch it on TV and fall asleep. However, not being one to let them get ahead in the fitness race I have been doing some preparation. I can now ride my bike on pavements without stabilizers. How good is that? I'm sure my fitness will improve as I go.
The record for this ride is 1 day, 2 hours, 4 minutes and 19 seconds. Bit slow considering a man from the RAF did it in just 46 minutes 44 seconds. Although that was in F-4K Phantom Jet.
Arvind Pandya ran it backwards in 26 days. He never saw where he was going only where he had been.
Steve Gough walked it naked taking 6 months including 2 rest stops in jail.
People have even done the ride on unicycles!! In 14 days, probably quicker than we will do it? In fact two unicyclists rode through Bolton-le-Sands last summer doing the route.
I have to say that we will not be attempting any of the aforementioned. We just want to finish?
The Route.
The ride is 900 miles +. The + is for all the wrong turns?
I imagine that the choice of saddle is important? So too is the anti-chafe cream and the double gusset would be an
ass et? Seat too low, gears too high and splayed legs = sore knees. What else?
We leave Lands End and follow the South West coast cycling through St Ives, Newquay and Padstow where there are good fish & chips to be had. Scenic but very hilly.
From Padstow we travel to Launceston, Oakhampton and Crediton passing through big, high, wide open country rounding the two moors, Bodmin & Dartmoor. Taking a more Northerly direction we head up towardsTaunton making our way to Cheddar. On from Cheddar, the Severn Bridge crossing and the beautiful Wye Valley wait for us. Once we stagger out of the Welsh Marches we head for Ellesmere and Chester. From Chester we cycle to Slaidburn and familiar country. At some point we will have a sleep over at Bolton-le-Sands before heading up over Shap Fell and on to Carlisle. We could even take in the Lake District?
As we reach the first and last house in Scotland at Gretna we get ready for the Scottish hills (though not as bad as Cornwall & Devon I'm told) passing through Dumfries on our way up towards Ayr & Irvine eventually catching a ferry at Ardrossan to Arran. Once in Arran we cycle north to Lochranza before catching another ferry back to the mainland.
Once on the mainland we head up to Oban and Fort William before setting off along the Caledonian Canal to Inverness. Once in Iverness we have a choice of several routes to John O'Groats and the finish. Easy eh!
Every County we pass through has a variety of local food and drink. Can't wait.
We will update with any developments.
