The 2010 Amsterdam Marathon · 17 October 2010
Hey gang. This is it. This is the biggie. On the 17th of October 2010, I'll be running 26.2miles (that's 42km for you crazy Euro kids) around the city of Amsterdam to raise money for the stroke unit at the Royal Derby Hospital. The reasons for this are many -
a) I've been training for a marathon since March, so I should actually do one really
b) I've never been to Amsterdam, and I've heard the women there are interesting
c) I really like canals
d) I like the fact that there is a place called the Vondelpark, and the route goes through it (go on, say it - Vondelpark)
e) I want to raise money for the stroke unit at the Royal Derby Hospital
The last point is the most important. Back in June, my Grandma suffered a very severe stroke which was a shattering experience for her and all of my family. Immediately after this, she was cared for and assessed at the Royal Derby Hospital where she spent a number of weeks. Throughout what was a hideously traumatic time, she remained remarkably cheerful and was carefully assessed and monitored to ensure that her ongoing quality of life could be as good as possible in the circumstances. This was thanks in a great part to the staff there. I just want to do something to say thank you - not just on behalf of my Grandma but for all of us. If you have a spare quid or two, please just take a moment to make a donation - I'd really apprecicate it and it will go a long way to allowing the staff at the Royal Derby to go on making a difference for people.
Plus it'll be a bloody good incentive for me to keep going when my legs conk out at 22 miles!!
Thank you.
