Story
I'm a just retired cleft surgeon, Trustee, and long time supporter of the Cleft Lip and Palate Association (CLAPA). CLAPA was set up by volunteers and has been helping children, adults and families affected by cleft lip and/or palate for 40 years. It receives no government or NHS income and relies hugely on funding raised by volunteers; from coffee mornings and bake sales to school events and challenges by people pushing beyond their comfort zones to raise money and awareness.
None of these activities can happen at the moment. CLAPA expects to lose more than half its income as a result of the pandemic.
CLAPA works closely with NHS cleft teams. It enables people to connect with others who have had the same experiences so that they can share their stories, their worries and their triumphs. This is so important! I have often heard how much difference CLAPA makes to the lives of the families I have looked after.
In the current pandemic, babies with cleft lip and/or palate are still being born, but NHS cleft teams cannot operate, and vital regular checks as the children grow up can only happen by telephone or video (unless there is an urgent problem of course).
It will take some time before everything is back on track in the NHS and for families affected by cleft lip/palate. It will be particularly important for them to find support and to be able to share their worries via CLAPA.
The 2.6 challenge is such a great idea. In my aged state, I will row on the dusty machine in our front room for 26 miles. No hills, no wind. I'm not sure how long it will take, but I'll let you know when I get there.
Please support me in supporting CLAPA.
