I met Will when we both started at Leeds Medical School in 1969, and have been friends ever since. Will was my best man at our wedding, and we have both lived and worked as GPs in Keighley, Will working at St Andrew's Surgery for over 30 years. Our children grew up together, and although they have gone their separate ways, we have always shared a keen interest in our families.
So it was a real shock when Will started developing symptoms of MND - a cruel disease! Will, to his credit, has remained cheerful and positive, and is getting on with life - still playing golf and very involved with his family.
I was inspired to raise money for the Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA) obviously because of Will's diagnosis, but also hearing and seeing what Kevin Sinfield has done for the MNDA in support of Rob Burrow. I don't think I could do anything like Kevin has done, but in my own small way, walking the Coast to Coast, from St Bees to Robin Hoods Bay, (about 188 miles - or double that, the number of times I'm likely to get lost!), I thought I could make a contribution to the excellent work that the MNDA does. (Please visit www.mndassociation.org for more details).
In addition, another good friend of mine, Lis Tomlinson, who was a Practice Nurse at Kilmeny Surgery, in Keighley, where I worked as a GP, sadly died of MND in 2004.
I plan to start from St Bees on 20th April and get to Robin Hoods Bay on 2nd of May.
So, I have lots of reasons to support this very worthwhile charity, and I hope you will too!
With many thanks,
Ron McGill
