As some of you already know, on 18th December 2020 my twin daughters Freyja and Orla were born. Orla had a very traumatic birth and was born with no pulse and required lengthy CPR and adrenaline amongst other life saving measures immediately. She had a haemorrhage between her skull and scalp (Subgaleal hemorrhage) and she was struggling to clot her blood.
The first few days were very bleak and we were told to prepare for the worst however she is a fighter and her strength and Freyja’s love along with everything the City Hospital NICU team did kept her alive and things started to go in the right direction. She was on the City Hospital NICU for 3 and a half weeks and after she was stable and required further care to aid her recovery, we moved to Birmingham hospital for 1 and a half weeks and QMC for 3 weeks. A lot of her organs were affected due to the lack of oxygen and this caused many other problems that needed to be addressed but she is thriving with the continued support of specialist teams.
We still cannot thank the nurses, doctors, consultants and all the other staff at the ICU enough for saving our daughters life and for the support whilst we were there. They are such incredible people.
About 1 in 7 babies each year are admitted into neonatal units. There is a high chance you will know someone who has experienced neonatal care.
I know some will be aware I did a 36 hour triathlon in 2018 however this is different for two main reasons:
The last was done with 12 hours breaks in between each event, this will be a FULL 36 hour block, 12 hour swim, 12 hour cycle, 12 hour run.
Distances being aimed for based on the last one which had 12 hour breaks between:
Swim - 18 miles
Cycle - 160 miles
Run - 52.4 miles
This time, the cycle and run will be outside meaning the elements along with terrain will be more challenging. It does however mean that anyone interested in joining in for any distance can do and I massively encourage it. It’d be nice to have some company!!
Sianne will be joining in along the way also and on standby for any sports massages that I may require!
If you are interested in partaking, just contact me at robin.gurney@notts.police.uk or by text if you have my number.
Any amount you can donate will help so much and the money will be going to such an incredible department and something that means so much to myself and my family.
BRING IT ON!
