Story

PLEASE DONATE ON MY TEAM PAGE

Here's a letter to Ian and Crista (Isaac's mum and dad) about the equipment St George's needs to help babies like Isaac.  The Baby Isaac fund has already raised almost half the money needed.  With your support, and my legs (!) we could raise the rest....

Dear Cristina

I am writing regarding your amazing efforts to raise funds to improve the care of sick babies at the St George's hospital neonatal unit.

I am a consultant paediatric and neonatal surgeon working at St George's very closely with the neonatal intensive care team.

A great advance in the care of newborn babies in past few years is the innovation of minimally inasive or "keyhole" surgery.  This allows complex surgical conditions such as diaphragmatic hernia, intestinal atresia, acute appendicitis and inguinal hernias to be treated with very fine instruments, using video surgery.  This avoids the child having a large invasive open operation and, we believe, leads to a faster recovery with less pain and fewer scars.

We are very fortunate at St George's having a team of excellent surgeons performing these innovative operations and are, in fact,  pioneering new techniques using these instruments. Some of our work recently made the national press and ITV News.  I have attached recent journal and press articles.

I'm am sure you can undserstand the limitations that NHS budgets can have on the provision of the precision engineered instruments required for this type of surgery.  We are desperately in need of further instruments to help more and more small babies with surgical conditions.

We would really appreciate your help to raise funds to obtain two sets of instruments and surgical telescopes, one 2mm and one 3mm, manufactured by the German company Storz.

These two sets together would cost in the region of £15,000 - £20,000.  They would be invaluable, the 2mm set would be the smallest in this country and would certainly go a long way in advancing these techniques for babies at St George's and around the world.

I wish you great success in this charity venture and hope that you can help us in this endeavour.

Please have a look at the attachments to get an idea of the amazing surgery that can be done with these instruments.

Best Wishes

Zahid Mukhtar
