Story
Well, The 5 have become 4 and one of those is ill today!!! Get well soon Andy.
The time is very near indeed. A week and a half to go. We are all getting a little nervous and making our excuses now, "my back's bad", "my knee's gone", etc. etc. etc.
However, the 4 that are left are determined to carry on and will be there on 11th.
Today, 31st March, The Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Paul Stephenson gave his support when he attended Stoke Newington Police Station. Apparently he ran a half marathon 30 years ago in 1 hour 19 mins, which would leave most of us in the dust.
Anyway, fingers crossed, but most definitely not the legs.
On 11th April 2010 our small team of 5 will take to the streets for the Paris Marathon 2010 in order to raise money for 3 charities, Help for Heroes, Garden House Hospice (Letchworth) and St. Joseph's Hospice (Hackney). 2 weeks after that, I (Rob Heeley) aim to put my trainers back on and run or limp the London Marathon. 2 Marathons in 2 weeks.
On the day I started this page, there are about 10 weeks left to go until the Big Day. Our training SHOULD be in full swing. The reality of that is not quite as we would like it. Modern life, families, work, age and the weather seem to conspire against us at different times, however we are trying to put the hours and more importantly the miles in.
Now, I've had to set up 3 separate pages (the way it has to be done, I'm afraid) for each of these charities we are aiming to support. You get to pick the one you support if any.
Why 3 charities?
The charities we have chosen were picked after great deliberation, they are a mixture of the very personal, the general and the local interest, but each one is incredibly worthy and in need of every bit of help we can offer. If we thought we could raise more money and help more charities, we would have a list longer than this page could cope with, so we settled for these 3.
Help for Heroes: it's work for the injured troops and families of our country's armed forces is a vital part of rehabilitation for those casualties of the various military campaigns Britain is now involved in. We chose this due to our respect for those troops and Andy's military connections.
Hospices provide invaluable care and support for those who have been diagnosed with terminal illnesses and their families. Most hospices receive less than 50% of their funding from the NHS, relying on donations to complete their caring and supportive work.
We've chosen the Garden House Hospice due to the great help they provided to Gary and his young children when his late wife spent her final days there.
St Joseph's Hospice is another amazing organisation, offering this invaluable service to people in North East London. It is based in Hackney, where we all worked at the time of setting ourselves this challenge.
