Story
Marathon Day
I am pleased to report that I successfully completed the London Marathon today in a time of 4 hours 16 minutes, coming 15143rd out of the 37000 runners who started the race.
Most importantly of all, it looks as if my colleagues, suppliers, friends and family will have donated in excess of £5000 to this very worthy cause. I am deeply grateful and I have been touched by the number of people who have said that MS has affected their close friends or family members. I will write to everyone personally in the next few days to say thank you.
The run itself was extremely hard work. I finished the first half in a respectable 1 hour 50 minutes and went downhill fairly rapidly from there. My legs were like lead after 20 miles. My previous London Marathon record survives for a while longer!
Thank you all once again to all those who have supported me and the MS Society.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a neurological condition which affects around 100,000 people in the UK. Most people are diagnosed between the ages of 20-40, but it can affect younger and older people too. A family friend went down with this debilitating illness in his 20s, leading to his premature death in his 40s. This has inspired me to support the MS Society for over 10 years.
I've run the London Marathon a couple of times before. Firstly, as a serving Army officer, I went round in 3 hours 52 minutes in 1985, 27 years ago. Then in 2006 I ran the London Marathon again and raised just under a thousand pounds for the MS Society, finishing in 4 hours and 6 minutes. I'm aiming for under 4 hours this time.
