Story
The Who Cares? Trust came to my attention because of a Radio 4 piece in 2015. The piece rang a bell because I was adopted at a very young age and realise I avoided the care system by luck only and grew up instead in a family environment.
The Trust is small and focussed and cares for children in care and those coming out of care into the wider world (and at that point, unlike most of us, with no family support network to call on). The care system is not easy to navigate and when you become an "adult" (at between 16 and 18) you can be set adrift.
It is therefore, perhaps, not surprising that a care leaver is six times less likely to go into higher education than other young people. I feel strongly that we should try and give young care leavers the best chance we can as we do (or would do) with our own children leaving the care of our own homes, and not write them off as too difficult. This group of care leavers is a pool of talent and we should invest in it for the future of us all - we ignore that talent at our peril.
Thank you very much for your help.
