* WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS? *
I'm running the London Marathon 2017 for Refuge, in order to raise money for, and awareness of, the vital work they do in supporting women and children experiencing domestic violence.
I'm not a natural runner- far from it! In fact, when I signed up, I could only run less than a kilometre before having to stop. This is gonna be a huge challenge for me, but knowing I'm doing it for such a good cause is (I hope!) going to make the training easier. Anything you can afford to donate goes towards helping Refuge carry out their work, and gives me the motivation to keep going.
I'm aiming to raise £2,500 which I know is a huge ask, but I'm hoping that with the help and support of my friends, family and comrades I can get there!
* WHY REFUGE? *
1 in 4 women experience domestic violence in their lifetime, and it can happen to anyone of any age- including young women and teenagers. Two women are killed per week in England & Wales by a current or former partner, and recent research by Refuge indicates that over half of young women (18-21) have experienced at least one violent incident from a boyfriend, husband or partner.
Refuge supports 3,700 women and children on any given day through a range of services, including refuges, independent advocacy, community outreach and culturally-specific services. Refuge’s award winning campaigns aim to educate the general public and ultimately prevent domestic violence by ensuring that women have the information and support they need to plan a safe escape, and their lobbying activities help to ensure that women and children experiencing domestic violence's needs are represented at the highest possible level. All of this costs money.
