Hi Everyone!
As some of you may know in June 2018, I will be spending 4 weeks volunteering with the Warwick Laksh programme. Each year the programme sends 12 students to the Laksh farm in India to help provide mentoring and support for teachers working in rural centres outside of Dehli. The programme is highly competitive and out of 200 applicants, I am 1/12 that has been selected this year!
The goal of the Warwick Laksh Programme is simple: to offer a sustainable route out of poverty through education for young people in rural communities.
My role will involve providing support and mentoring to student teachers who work on the programme to improve their English and confidence in teaching. Most importantly helping to create creative and inspiring lessons for the young people, as often education in rural schools leaves children disengaged and unlikely to complete schooling.
On a personal note, the experience is important for me as I feel strongly about taking part in effective, conscientious altruism rather than a self-fulfilling experience. I want to take part in Laksh because I believe that it prioritises making a lasting and meaningful impact on a community in India and improving the life chances of the children.
The programme has already made a significantly positive impact on the lives of the children reaching the centre, especially impacting the poorest children and girls, who often struggle to access quality education. The programme now supports 3 schools and in 2016, 672 children were registered in the schools.
Please give what you can, even the smallest donations make a huge impact! for example, £10 can fund a learner at the centre for 1 month.
