Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I lost my uncle, Joe Flynn, to oesophegial cancer in January. He was battling it for almost two years; in that time, he underwent severe chemo, surgeries, the joy of remission and the heartbreak of discovering that, not only had his cancer come back, it had spread.

Instead of giving in, Joe decided to use his illness for something good, in a fashion only Joe could manage. He started raising funds, giving talks and raising the awareness of the importance of maintaining our health, especially for men who often ignore it. He appeared in local and national newspapers and also talked with Ray D'Arcy on the radio.

Joe touched many lives. People came far and wide for his funeral and the support people gave his family was phenomenal. I'm hoping to raise money to help find new treatments, therapies and, ultimately, a cure. Mostly, I want to keep my uncle's message alive.

The same night we lost Joe, we lost my Nan. Nan had Alzheimer's disease, but she also had suffered from breast cancer a few years ago. She had a breast removed and went on chemo tablets to kill any remaining cells. Her Alzheimer's was a blessing in a way as she didn't know what happened to her; the fact she wasn't worrying about it let her recover faster. Unfortunately, she became sick again in October of last year. At this stage, she was in an advanced stage of Alzheimer's. The doctors said they couldn't do any invasive tests or exams on her, as it would be too traumatic - she wouldn't understand what was happening - but, most likely, her cancer had returned.

My dare is a big one. I've been dared to sing live on stage at the Olympia theater on October 21st, along with the Riptide movement. I'm petrified of public performances and I sound like a bag of cats anyway when I sing, so this will certainly be a challenge! But, at the end of the day, it pales in comparison to the challenges men, women and children who have been diagnosed across the country are currently going through. The more money I can raise, the better. No matter the amount, I also want to say thank you for helping out.
