In support of Epilepsy Research UK's '6 for the 600' challenge, my brother and I are running 6 miles every day for 6 days during National Epilepsy Week, starting Monday 18th May.

Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological conditions in the world. In the UK 600 people are diagnosed with the condition every single week. And even though research is vastly improving, 65% of epilepsy cases still have no known cause (myself included).

I developed it at the age of 15 and have been lucky enough to respond to medication - not without its difficulties that's for sure, but in comparison to others who live with the condition, I count myself extremely lucky!

There are over 40 different types of seizures, many of which drugs cannot control. Due to this, thousands of patients live with uncontrolled seizures, some of them may have multiple seizures in one day, some sufferers also lose the ability to speak through cumulative brain damage. We are always reminded of the worst case scenario every time we have an appointment with our consultant - SUDEP (Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy Patients). We reside ourselves to this just being a fact of life now, but the actual facts are that there are still 21 epilepsy related deaths in the UK every week.

Despite the studies, trials and other incredible work carried out by Epilepsy Research UK, there is still so little known about how to treat it. Life changing and life saving research is still needed, and Epilepsy Research UK are dedicating their efforts to help people like me achieve a life completely free from epilepsy!
