Professor R.J. (Bob) Morris spent his career teaching and researching Economic and Social History at the University of Edinburgh. His research interests included class formation, urbanisation and urban conflict. An initial interest in middle class formation led to studies of associational culture and civil society. The study of the 19th century middle classes in industrial towns involved the relationship of gender, property, and the family life cycle. The study of conflict was extended to encompass sectarian, language and ethnically based conflicts. He also had a keen interest in the Agricultural Revolution and pursued this during an active 'retirement' walking the fields and coastal paths of Berwickshire, historical map in hand, often accompanied by his family.
