Story

In March 2014 we lost our mum, Sand Martin after a 3 month battle with cancer.

Mum was beautiful, funny, kind and generous, a truly wonderful person who we miss so much. She was also an amazing and enthusiastic runner. In the year before her diagnosis, she ran every day for 365 consecutive days for at least 20 minutes. During this time she ran in England, Ireland, Greece, Morocco and Sierra Leone.  Highlights included getting lost in a small town on the edge of the Sahara, running in the Atlas Mountains, around the streets of Freetown, Sierra Leone, and along Daymer Bay in Cornwall.  She also completed the 5K run at the inaugural Sierra Leone Street Child Marathon in 2012 and the Bath Half Marathon in 2009 and she was due to run the Brighton Half Marathon with Rosie in February 2014 before her illness struck.

All 3 of us are running the London Marathon 2015 in the memory and spirit of Mum and to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. We want to highlight the amazing work that Macmillan does and to raise as much money as possible so that people like us can continue to receive the support they offer. People may not be aware of quite how much Macmillan do and how essential they are to people whose lives are touched by cancer. From being at the end of the phone, answering questions and being a calming voice for Mum’s sister when she was alone receiving the news that Mum wouldn't make it, to the constant support for Mum, our family and friends at home and in the hospital, we are endlessly grateful to Macmillan for being a steady shoulder to lean on.

We want to contribute to Macmillan Cancer Support to help them continue their wonderful work in support of those suffering from cancer and their family and friends.  They fulfil a vital role in ensuring that when cancer strikes there will always be someone out there who knows how you feel, is able to help you feel that you are not alone and to provide advice and support at such a traumatic time.

We can't wait to cross that finish line and know that we will be helping people just like us whose lives are affected by cancer.

Thank you!
