Story
The world is faced with a COVID 19 epidemic, Kenya is an east African
country which is home to very many vulnerable communities and groups. Many of
these groups because of their poverty levels face a challenge to prevent
themselves against the threat of COVID19 due to their vulnerability. To counter
this, Project Abroad Kenya proposes a project to help protect and build the
capacity of these vulnerable groups. Through this the vulnerable groups and
frontline health workers will be able to learn and protect themselves hence
reducing their chances of being infected with the COVID 19 virus. Projects
abroad has been working in partnership with the county government of laikipia,
Kenya for 5years through our volunteer programme. As our volunteer cooperation
programs have come to a halt due to global travel restrictions, our team has
decided to start a program that is meant to contribute to reduction of
incidence of the corona virus and mitigate its impacts. Our team in Kenya proposes to establish a project to reduce the
impacts and spread of COVID-19 in our community. There have been over 3000
confirmed cases of the Coronavirus in Kenya. By the end of the project,
it is expected that at least 2000 vulnerable members of the community and over
500 households will be sensitized and have capacity to mitigate and reduce the
spread of COVID 19 among the vulnerable communities in Laikipia.
The project aims at assisting vulnerable communities in
protecting themselves and having capacity against the COVID 19 epidemic,
providing personal protective equipment for frontline workers, spreading
awareness and education to communities, distributing hand washing stations, and
direct support in the form of food and other necessities to disadvantaged groups.
It is good to note that most of the households are casual workers, the elderly,
orphans who have lost their sources of livelihoods due to the government
directives of keeping distance and staying at home. This has resulted to many
breadwinners losing their jobs, closure of sources of employment hence living
these communities more vulnerable to COVID 19.
We appreciate anyone taking an interest to help the
communities through our intervention program.
