Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
A vast majority of Kenyan teenagers suffering with deafness do not have access to adequate secondary school education, leading to a disadvantaged community of unskilled individuals. Only 12% of deaf children get the opportunity to attend an appropriate special educational needs secondary school, and there are currently no available facilities in the Eastern province of Kenya.
In response to this urgent issue local Churches and Mothers Union have united in an initiative to set up a much needed, dedicated secondary school for deaf teenagers in a town called Riandu, in the eastern province. The grassroots idea is supported by both the local community and international student volunteers who intend to achieve an ambitious build programme, phased over 3 years, due to commence in August 2014. A Nottingham University student is heading up the UK core team consisting of dedicated student members who will enthusiastically organise and fundraise for this vital project. My role is to oversee and advise the Project Manager throughout the design process.
Alongside the provision of specialised educational facilities, dormitory style living accommodation will provide an on-site home for up to 200 teenagers during their stay. The students will be able to experience a variety of uplifting & educational spaces across the site in a unique living and learning environment. In the coming years the Riandu Deaf School will provide a life changing impact to thousands of young people’s lives. Your support towards this scheme is greatly appreciated.
