Story
Hello! I will be running the London Marathon this April to raise money for the Haemophilia Society.
Haemophilia is a rare inherited bleeding disorder which makes it difficult for blood to clot. This means that those with the condition bruise easily and any cuts and scrapes they have bleed longer. Most seriously, haemophilia can cause internal bleeds which damage organs, tissue and can even be fatal.
My family has been deeply affected by the disorder. My brother Inigo (13) and cousin, Bertie (5) live with haemophilia which has compromised their ability to take part in a full range of school activities and occasioned innumerable hospital visits.
My grandad, who passed away in 2010, was also haemophiliac and a victim of the contaminated blood scandal; where nearly 5,000 haemophiliacs and others with bleeding disorders were infected with hepatitis and HIV after unclean blood was used during minor elective surgery. My grandad also loved running but was unable to pursue it long term as his haemophilia caused his joints to swell.
The Haemophilia Society has supported my family since my brother’s birth and particularly during the public inquiry into the contaminated blood scandal. I am excited to run on behalf of the organisation to raise awareness of the condition, remember my grandad, and assist a charity that does such amazing work.
