Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.
Lisa was diagnosed with Stage 3A bowel cancer on 19th June 2012. Since then, she has endured radiotherapy with chemotherapy, major surgery, further chemotherapy and, lastly, in June, an ileostomy reversal. Despite all this, she has managed to secure a place at Aberdeen University on a one year PGDE course which she starts this month, training to become a home economics teacher. The whole family is so proud of her.
Lisa and I had planned to run the BUPA Great North Run last September, but obviously couldn't due to ongoing treatment. We deferred our places and are running this year to raise funds for Bowel Cancer UK, to help others afflicted with this awful disease.
Dear Sponsors
Lisa and I completed the run yesterday. As you might have seen on TV it was a wet and windy day, but the wind was mostly behind as we were running from West to East. The atmosphere was fantastic, with huge crowds watching despite the weather. We had a near disaster at the start, as we missed the main baggage buses, and thought we were going to have to run with our luggage! Fortunately we found the back-up vans just in time. Lisa took off pretty fast and I didn’t see her again after the start. I was pleased to still be running at mile nine, but at that point my legs seized up and I slowed right down. We both struggled with miles ten to twelve, which were quite uphill, but the last mile along the seafront was flat, with the red arrows zooming overhead and big crowds out cheering. So despite a year of cancer treatment, Lisa beat me by half-an-hour – I am thinking of asking for a drugs test.
The low point was probably the walk back to the car at the finish, during which the heavens opened and we were drenched in our dry kit – ready for the five hour drive home! However, given the uncertainty of the last year, we were just delighted to both be there running. Both pretty stiff today, definitely need to get more training miles in next time.
Your generosity has been outstanding, you have raised over £10,000 between you, including gift aid, so on behalf of Bowel Cancer UK we would like to thank you all for your donations – this money will make a real difference to the organisation.
Thank you all very much.
Phil & Lisa
