Story
I've never run a marathon despite several attempts at entry into London, it was always a bit half hearted and afterwards I was always a little bit relieved as the size of the challenge - and training involved - dawned on me.
In the last couple of years, as the running bug grabbed me again after 20 odd years, I have taken part in several 10k's and last years Great North Run for which many of you were kind enough to sponsor me.
Then, as part of the "once every 20 years" Preston Guild celebrations, it was announced that a series of runs would be organised in 2012 including a 5k, 10k, 10 mile and a marathon.
Well I'd managed 3 of those in the last couple of years so it was difficult to resist the ultimate challenge of all four in a year including the marathon in October, especially as the route passes within half a mile of my doorstep - I could always stop off for a brew if it all became too much!
Anyway after training all year here we are 4 weeks from race day and I've just peaked at a 21 mile training run last weekend, just the barrier of a two week holiday in Turkey to get over then we're ready for the off!!
They say never say never, but I expect this to be my first and last ever marathon so thought it would be nice to raise some money for a very worthwhile cause at the same time. The Hospices of this country do a fantastic job with minimal government funding - my local hospice lost over £90,000 this year because their main fundraising event was washed out by the great British summer, they will need the help that Help For Hospices are able to provide.
Your support is invaluable and will help me to complete a distance I've never run before. On behalf of the Hospices - thank you!
