Story

Update - Shortly after 2pm I was at the top of the Ramada Hotel. A safety briefing from the experts had calmed my nerves. The ropes, I was told, would take the weight of a lift - the chances of me taking the fast route down were minimal. I was in my Spiderman outfit, and my co-abseiler Sheralee (aka SuperWoman) was ready to drop with her heels over the edge. Reassuringly, I could hear my son shouting "You can do it Daddy!" 7 storeys below. At the last minute, I realised my Spiderman mask wouldn't fit over my safety hat ! I swopped the two around, and while I fiddled, SuperWoman burned down the side of the building. I didn't see her again until my feet hit the pavement. Onlookers said I looked a little "wooden" at the start - having seen the video I think they are right. I loosened up though, and soon started to enjoy it. That is, all apart from the bit halfway down when my feet seemed to lose touch with the wall - it seems the Ramada may be on a bit of a "tilt" ! Less than two minutes later I was on terra firma, and relieved to see my wife Jo, son Oliver, work colleagues and cousins supporting me. An hour later and I was back at work after one of the most bizarre lunch hours of my life.

Thank you so much to the Alzheimer's Society for making the event happen, and everyone who supported me on the day or sponsored me - THANK YOU !

The challenge - On Friday 1st July at around 2pm, while most sensible people are just coming out of the pub or thinking about what they are going to do this weekend, I (with a number of other hapless souls) will be at the top of a 7-storey block of concrete in Milton Keynes called the Ramada Encore Inn, ready to walk backwards down the side of the thing.

I'm reliably informed I will have a rope attached to me.

I'm doing this not because I like walking down the outsides of hotels, but because I want to raise some money for the Alzheimer's Society.

Personal experience over the last couple of years has shown me how cruel this disease can be, and I'm asking for your help in raising some money to support those people who suffer from it.

Alzheimer's Society is the leading support and research charity for people with dementia, their families and carers. There are 750,000 people with dementia in the UK with numbers set to rise to one million by 2021.
