Hello, my name is Rosa and I just turned 7!

Hola me llamo Rosa y acabo de cumplir 7 años!

Pedro William is my little brother. He is 4 years old and popped out of my mummy's tummy 11 weeks too soon.

Pedro William es mi hermanito. Tiene 4 años y salió de la tripita de mi mamá 11 semanas antes de tiempo.

They were both very poorly for some time and this was difficult for me and the rest of my family.

Los dos estuvieron malitos en el hospital y lo pasé muy mal.

Because of this Pedro cannot walk. My mummy says that his brain was hurt and he now has cerebral palsy.

Por culpa de esto, Pedro no puede caminar. Mi mamá dice que su cerebro se dañó y ahora tiene parálisis cerebral.

My little brother loves playing with me, but he cannot always join in as much as he would like because he cannot walk or stand on his own. He is the most amazing brother, funny, clever and very mischievous.

A mi hermanito le encanta jugar conmigo, pero no puede jugar a muchas cosas, porque no puede andar o estar de pie solito. Sin embargo, es el mejor hermano del mundo, divertido, listo y a veces muy travieso.

My daddy and mummy found out that there is an operation called SDR, that would help him walk by taking away all of his stiffness and pain.

Mis papás han averiguado que hay una operación que se llama SDR, que puede ayudarle a caminar. La operación quita la rigidez y el dolor de los músculos y le ayudaría a hacer sus ejercicios.

After the operation, he will have to do lots of intense physio for at least two years to help him walk. But I know that he is up to the challenge. Luckily the doctors at Great Ormond Street also agree!

Tras la operación, Pedro tendrá que hacer fisioterapia de manera intensiva, durante al menos dos años para ayudarle a andar, pero sabemos que él tendrá la fuerza necesaria para este desafío. It would be wonderful if Pedro William was able to walk through the school gates when he starts school next September. I would be the proudest sister.

We are fundraising to make Pedro's dream come true.

The SDR operation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhizotomy) and the aftercare is not currently covered by the NHS, which is why we have set up this page. Up until recently children had to travel to the US for this operation. It has been done privately in England for some time. We are hoping that the operation will be covered under a pioneering scheme the NHS will be starting soon, but we have no certainty of this yet. We have been told that even if this is the case, the physiotherapy needed after the operation will not be covered. Without the required physiotherapy, the operation will not be effective.

La operación que Pedro necesita es una Rizotomía Dorsal Selectiva (http://www.stlouischildrens.org/es/our-services/center-cerebral-palsy-spasticity/about-selective-dorsal-rhizotomy-sdr). Hasta hace poco esta operación sólo se hacía en Estados Unidos. Desde hace unos años la operación se hace en varios hospitales ingleses a pacientes privados. En este momento la operación no la cubre el sistema de salud pública. Estamos intentando que la operación de Pedro se pueda incluir en un programa piloto de la sanidad pública. Sin embargo esto sólo cubriría la operación y no las sesiones de fisioterapia intensiva que son necesarias durante dos años. Sin el tratamiento postoperatorio adecuado, la intervención no es efectiva.

The two-year physiotherapy plan and equipment needed after the operation will cost £25-£30,000. If the operation is eventually funded by the NHS, we will reduce our target to this amount.

We are raising funds through Tree of Hope (http://www.treeofhope.org.uk), a well known and respected children's charity, which has reviewed and accepted to help with Pedro's case. The funds will be managed and allocated by Tree of Hope according to Pedro's medical needs.
